In a place where time seems to have been standing still for decades, you will walk around the giant base in the nearby forest from another period and camp. Here are the sequoias, the most remarkable living beings on earth and the oldest. These living monuments are of varying ages, but some date from over 2,000 years ago.

The trees you see today were born as Columbus sailed to the Americas for the first time in the Roman Empire, or in the Dark Ages or, for children of the earth. And around the 1st century General Sherman, the biggest living tree on earth, was born. General Sherman is 275 feet long and has a circumference of over 36 feet on its foundation. Visitors call the tree lovely and humble but warn that lines will take pictures by the tree for some time. Some advocate early arrival and restraint.

Two paths allow travelers to see the tree. The Key Trail is a half-mile downhill to meet the oak, from a parking lot off Wolverton Lane. When you cross the Giant Forest along the way, you will spot displays on giant sequoias.

There is no better way to top off your tents after visiting the park and wandering amid the giant sequeuri than to place your tent underneath the pines and create a chair under the night sky.
